1943 1c Ngc Ms66 Mint Error Steel Lincoln Cent Extremely Cool Error
1943 Zinc-Plated Steel Lincoln Cent. Mint Error: Obverse Lamination (Enhanced by Die Clashing). Normally we avoid major Planchet Lamination Mint Errors, but this one is a special case; it has much more going on! The Planchet Lamination error refers to the zinc coating on the steel planchet, which is separating, leaving air bubbles between and causing raised lumps all over the obverse. This lends an odd appearance, for sure, and deserves a Mint Error label, but this could happen to any 1943 cent (it is a common problem on 1982 and later copper plated zinc cents as well). What makes this piece extremely interesting is that the dies were also clashed, and the air bubbles on the right obverse are clearly following the shape of the wheat ear from the reverse that had clashed into the obverse field. In effect it's two Mint Errors melded together, Planchet Lamination and Clashed Dies. A partial outline of Lincoln's bust shows on the reverse too, but there are no air bubbles on that side. This is likely a unique piece, and it survives in nearly superb-gem condition, with original frosty brilliance through. What a fantastic coin; another one for the collector who has everything else.
