PANAMA PATTERN SET of 3 COINS 1988 NGC Prf Details KM-Pn9-10-11; Six Sets Minted at Mexico City Mint. One of Six Sets Minted (at Mexico City Mint) as a 1988 Pattern Set of 3 Coins for consideration of new Proof coins to be issued by Panama.

They are in NGC slabs labeled "PROOF DETAILS" and "ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE". The set contains a Half Balboa, Quarter Balboa and One Tenth Balboa denomination coins. They catalog in Krause as KM-Pn11, KM-Pn10 and KM-Pn9. These three coins were in a Stacks/Bowers Sale years ago as a lot of the same three pieces.

The label is still on the back of the slabs. That is just for two of the three coins. About that Environmental Damage: years ago I was at the Mexico City Mint in the design room on a mint tour with a group from the Sociedad Numismatica de Mexico.

On a rack on the wall were old dies including the one that had been used to strike the 1961 Half Balboa, KM-26. As were several other Panama coins of that year. See Grigore, pg 52, mid-page, Coins and Currency of Panama, Krause Pubs. I was allowed to examine the dies and noticed the Half Balboa die. The dies had been there quite a while and were not canceled and "slightly oxidized" which created the so-called Environmental Damage. It is obvious to see that they reworked the design and date of one of those dies to strike these patterns. For the Arms side you can see the 9 stars above the arms line up perfectly and different than the 1953 issue which line up with the legend differently.

So actually these are as struck with rusty dies and not really with "damage" as they are labeled! THE IMAGES: it is difficult to get images of coins in slabs because of the different levels at which the camera tries to focus. Getting the colors right is also not easy. I don't feel like I did justice to these coins. The Half Balboa is a bright uncirculated proof strike; the Quarter Balboa and One Tenth Balboa coins are toning red-orange.

I toned that color down to help show details and you can see some of the color in the image of the sets. IF YOU DO NOT PLAN ON PAYING, PLEASE DON'T PARTICIPATE!!
